Tucker scores 40 points in Ram loss to Gilbert

Greene County Ram sophomore Trey Tucker scored 40 points in Tuesday night’s game in Jefferson against the Gilbert Tigers, and his teammates added another 32 points, but it still wasn’t enough to top the Tigers, who are now 5-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and on the season. The Rams lost 87-72 and are now 3-2 in the HOIAC and 3-3 overall.

The Rams scored at the Tigers’ pace in the second half, with both teams scoring 21 points in the third quarter and the Tigers scoring only one more point (23) than the Rams’ 22 points in the fourth quarter. The Tigers were up by eight points, 24-16, after the first quarter of play, and they stretched their lead to 14 points, 43-29 at the half. The score was 64-50 for the Tigers after three quarters.

Tucker came into the game averaging not quite 24 points per game, his average lower than last week after the Perry Blue Jays held him to just 10 points last Saturday. Against the Tigers, it looked like he would have another frustrating game, as he scored only four points in the first quarter. He scored nine points in the second quarter. He started the second half with hot shooting, scoring nine points, including a 3-pointer, in the first 2:34 of play. The Rams were within five points of the Tigers, 48-43, half way into the third quarter. Tucker  finished the quarter with another five points for 27 points total, and put in another 13 points in the fourth quarter. Tucker made three 3-point shots and was seven of eight at the free throw line.

Sophomore Reid Lamoureux also scored a career-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Tyler Beger scored six points, Riah Nelsen scored five, Mitchell Gorsuch scored three, Max Neese scored two and Landon Braun scored  one point. Gorsuch and Beger each made 3-point shots.

The Tigers scored quickly many times, answering a Ram basket with one of their own in short order. The Tigers also had more second shots than the Rams, responding more quickly and with more height on offensive rebounds.

The Tigers were led by senior Wesley Greder at 26 points and sophomore Jack Hoiberg at 25 points.

The Rams will host North Polk Friday evening, with the varsity girls following at JV girls game at about 6 pm, and the varsity starting at about 7:45.
